Full Story
Started the day driving towards Long Mountain, turned around at Kidderminster when it looked like a sheet of stratus would effect the area. Blatted down to Selsley and watched Alex Coltman getting battered in a strong gusty WNW'ly. Decided to have a look at Frocester on the way home. Leaden sky but Sailplanes from Nympsfield climbing OK. Launched straight into a thermal and pointed into wind going up for 2 minutes before committing at 700ft. Large area of weak lift which I didn't expect to keep going but it did and eventually kicked off after drifting for 4km. Base only 3500ft but large CU and lift lines meant good progress south of Kemble, and through Lynham (now open at weekends). A blue hole over Swindon made me hesitate but found a good climb before the edge of the town which made me more confident in crossing. Pushed south to avoid an active Redlands drop zone, and over Liddington where there were 20 gliders on the hill but no one flying. If there was no body in the air it must have been howing which made me nervous. A scraggly CU got me a low save at Albourne, sped past Beacon Hill. Large mass of dark stratus stretching NW/SE looking like a remnant trough line with no sun on the ground and high cirrus in the gaps. Not looking good for the British Record. Great convergency climb to 4000ft at Whitchurch then a long glide past Popham with only small patches of sun on the ground. Past Lasham and a towing Sailplane, one weak climb to get 19th UK 100km and that was it! Waited at the Sun Inn for Charles Norwood who kindly gave me a lift back. Thanks mate.
