Notes

This map gives an overview of the flight, using the turnpoints to plot the track.

Its small scale has some drawbacks - short flights and loop flights may appear as a single blob, and flights along the coast may appear out at sea.

Use the for a detailed map and flight track.

Height:905 ftPosition:51.379180, -1.856460
Shiiiiit it's a comp... Some of the biggest names in UK paragliding are here... What am I doing here... Barney Mark and Phil have already had a play in the air before I get here... I'm dreading this! Let's get the flipping briefing out of the way and I can just get in the air! Thanks Kirsty for the friendly site briefing: -).
Story 2
Track point11:32:20
Height:2050 ftDuration:0:15 hrs
Speed:20.9 km/hDistance:0.4 km
Climb:-1.1 m/secPosition:51.380980, -1.852290
Struggling here, everyone else who's taken off seems to be doing ok, I'm not at the bottom yet but I'm not climbing out very comptetently either.
Story 3
Track point11:49:20
Height:4150 ftDuration:0:32 hrs
Speed:52.7 km/hDistance:5.1 km
Climb:-1.2 m/secPosition:51.406750, -1.798540
Phew high enough to run away.
Story 4
Track point11:55:20
Height:2398 ftDuration:0:38 hrs
Speed:57.2 km/hDistance:8.8 km
Climb:-1.5 m/secPosition:51.421150, -1.749870
Bugger, Kirsty said stick with anything you've got over Marlborough... I've got nowt here. Colbert's got a climb a bit east of me though... Might head over there then.
Story 5
Track point11:58:40
Height:3530 ftDuration:0:41 hrs
Speed:9.9 km/hDistance:10.0 km
Climb:3.4 m/secPosition:51.426630, -1.734640
Hahaaaaaa a proper climb... And polite and sociable too. "Hello is that Helen? " "Yes, who's that? " "It's Hugh, and that's Richard"... Pleased to meet you both, up we go.
Story 6
Turnpoint 312:07:20
Height:4156 ftDuration:0:50 hrs
Speed:54.4 km/hDistance:16.2 km
Climb:-0.9 m/secPosition:51.444730, -1.648850
I'm going to stay over here on the edge of my cloud above where there's some sunshiine on the ground... Don't care that my gaggle has gone north. But Colbert's somewhere here I can't see him, is he in a cloud? THIS cloud?
Story 7
Track point12:28:00
Height:3139 ftDuration:1:11 hrs
Speed:57.4 km/hDistance:26.0 km
Climb:-1.6 m/secPosition:51.506860, -1.543750
Ahhh they're all over there, looks like it's working even though there's hardly any sun on the ground! And there's Colbert, I think... So he wasn't anywhere near my cloud after all.
Story 8
Track point12:57:00
Height:2506 ftDuration:1:40 hrs
Speed:52.4 km/hDistance:38.8 km
Climb:-0.5 m/secPosition:51.595510, -1.418470
Get stuck here in zeroes for ages, while better pilots fly past proving that they're not zeroes and it's possible to get up in them. Seems to take me forever to find a useable bit of lift.
Story 9
Track point13:15:00
Height:3585 ftDuration:1:58 hrs
Speed:59.2 km/hDistance:47.4 km
Climb:-1.5 m/secPosition:51.649160, -1.328650
"Hi is that Helen? " "yes who's that? " "Pete".. "Hi Pete"... Turns out this person who has been making cracking decisions and thermalling brilliantly is Pete Logan who goes on to complete his first ton, thoroughly deserved well done Pete excellent flying!
Story 10
Track point13:21:00
Height:3917 ftDuration:2:04 hrs
Speed:26.8 km/hDistance:51.5 km
Climb:2.0 m/secPosition:51.673330, -1.284300
Pete Logan finds us a lovely solid climb out of here.
Story 11
Max Speed13:35:20
Height:3950 ftDuration:2:18 hrs
Speed:59.4 km/hDistance:59.8 km
Climb:-1.1 m/secPosition:51.740610, -1.217690
Other people say afterwards how nice it was to be flying over Oxford looking at the views. I'm so busy trying not to bomb out that I fail to notice Oxford altogether. Pete Logan climbs up from way below me showing how to core properly! This is about the 4th time he's done this today!
Story 12
Track point13:52:00
Height:3408 ftDuration:2:35 hrs
Speed:22.9 km/hDistance:70.3 km
Climb:0.1 m/secPosition:51.815310, -1.122370
Got a bit slow here... Was trying to work out what the sky was doing, pretty grey everywhere with cus underneath it. Stick with everything I've got while I try to work out what might work next. Gradually lose sight of everyone... Can just see one glider heading east over Bicester, pretty low. OK, decision time. Doesn't look like there's much lift off Bicester, I'm going further east towards where the clouds seem to be disintegrating more slowly.
Story 13
Track point14:02:00
Height:2319 ftDuration:2:45 hrs
Speed:40.9 km/hDistance:76.9 km
Climb:0.4 m/secPosition:51.849430, -1.042920
Kirsty and Alex chatting on the radio about landing in adjacent fields... I don't want to land yet! Come on, concentrate... As soon as I stop listening to their conversation and focus on my vario I lose the climb.
Story 14
Track point14:17:40
Height:708 ftDuration:3:00 hrs
Speed:18.5 km/hDistance:86.4 km
Climb:0.1 m/secPosition:51.908060, -0.942270
There's something here but it's pretty weak... Landable field just downwind with a windsock in it... BUZZARD upwind, quick, turn back upwind! But he glides off...
Story 15
Landing14:20:40
Height:393 ftDuration:3:03 hrs
Speed:1.4 km/hDistance:87.0 km
Climb:0.0 m/secPosition:51.911960, -0.935840
Bugger maybe I should have tried harder with those zeroes, bet Barney and Mark are half way to Cromer by now on their Ice Peaks, should have stuck with my gaggle, it's not even 2. 30 I should have gone back upwind. Check GPS to see where I am, oops I've wiped all the useful road/village data, dig out my map and find I'm not far from my sister's house and text her to see what my chances of a cuppa are... And she's heading back to Somerset in an hour! HA, retrieve sorted! Then the "well done" texts start coming in and I realise I haven't screwed up after all: -).
