An expected windy day forecast and when I arrived it was varying 10-23mph at 11am. A few gliders struggling near the hill and a few being drilled over the back.
I sat it out until later on. I set a goal of Cirencester as it was looking southerly to start with.
It dropped a few mph and then early afternoon so decided to launch. The conditions were quite spicy for about 30 minutes and then went more towards the SSE and got more unpredictable and rough. The glider took a couple of quick wing tip collapses so almost called it a day. I found it pretty rough in general and not fun!
I saw some of the crop out front moving round so pushed out and took that thermal up and over the hill. It smoothed out quickly over the back and much more like I remember flying was like.
I joined a few others in a gaggle and we pushed on a bit and then I lost sight of them but stayed with Mike Manners and on other. We worked it and headed over Avebury and pushed on. Gliding on over the escarpment down into the M4 valley and Bassett I was getting a bit lower. I could see a decent looking cloud and headed for it, slow to start but then picked up nicely so headed over west of Swindon to 4000feet. I saw the initial gaggle join up from earlier and we met over the M4 and on to Minety. I pushed on over to another cloud and at 4500ft had to go round some clouds but good lift.
Exiting that thermal over the lakes I pushed north to my goal but the clouds we all looking much better over towards Kemble but that was out due to airpsace. So pushed on in the hope for a cloud to develop en route. I bagged the goal turnpoint with 2500ft AMSL so tried to push west towards where the clouds where but a long transition seemed unlikely so pushed back to Cirencester and landed.
