Notes

Climb and Speed averaged over 20 second intervals.

These values may be lower than those shown by a flight instrument, which has access to continuous raw data.

Average Speed around course is measured from Start to Finish points.

Track Length is the cumulative distance between track points from Takeoff to Landing.

Monday was a beauty of a day! After the crazy instability of the last week, the airmass got just damped enough to stop the huge development but still give magic thermals to really high.

Impressed by Tims flight on 1 Apr, I decided to try to fly the same sort of route. Base was about 6000 at first, so some long glides to head for a solid convergence all the way along the bottom half of Glen Etive and all the way along the Loch. It was straight line for about 20 km from about Dalness to near the bottom end of the Loch. From the head of the loch, each cloud had base about 500 ft lower than the one before, so it was excellent fun just steering past the clouds (like flying a Tornado in slow motion ) There was what looked like a small gap in the line but I soon realised the sea air was coming over the hill from the W - by the rate I was plummeting, and dropping into the sea air coming up the Loch.

What goes down must go up - Getting worryingly close to the ground, I finally met a really strong climb, consistently more than 1000 fpm, with bits of the that typical Glencoe dry grass catching on the lines on the way up!

So, on across the Loch and round Cruachan then up the Glen Orchy ridge heading for Ben Dorrain. By the time I got to Bridge of Orchy, the sea had penetrated all the way inland with base getting steady lower from the W. The last cloud in the line was ahead of the sea air, and climbed up to just over 8000 ' - which I thought would have been fine to get back, but crossing Loch Tulla (where the sea air was blowing up towards Rannoch Moor ) it was extreme sink and I was below the top of Black Mount. Which must have been the last bit of warm air, is was back to 1100 fpm for as high as you wanted. 6000 seemed good enough so I set off then got a bit over confident and wondered away E for a bit and had to push quite hard to only just scrape in to close the triangle.

What amazing scenery!

David.
