This is a flight I did competing in the BCC at Pandy representing the SkySurfung club. This is only the second time I have done anything like an XC in the uk. The criteria for scoring on the day was to obtain the greatest distance possible with a maximum of 5 turn points. On the day the ceiling was only about 2500 feet so going over the back was not going to happen. I therefore flew strategically by going to as far as I could make it along the ridge of Pandy and back twice before going to the landing field. I flew downwind off the landing field as far as I thought I could go whilst being able to make it back to maximise my distance then at about 400 feet AGL I managed to find a thermal that was triggering of the brown filed next to the landing field.
I worked this thermal till it toped out at about 2500msl then flew downwind adding about another 5K to my distance.
What a brilliant day!
I want to say a big Thank You to the SEWHGPGC who hosted graciously allow other clubs to fly their sites for the BCC. Their generosity in hosting this event means that pilots like me who are just starting to go XC have the opportunity to gain a huge amount of experience in an environment that is really positive and helpful.
Thank You.
