Although I am not 'entering' the XCLeague this year, just recording my 100k+ flights, I thought this one was quite an interesting attempt of a triangle.
I was suppose to be working, but managed to reorganise things last minute and got to the hill too late for a decent XC distance I thought (in hindsight a 100k was possible! ). No sooner had I clipped in I was able to take off and join a climb with Joe and one other glider. I lost the climb briefly as a Niviuk joined and I was stuck behind, he went wide and I was able to outclimb him. It was eventually just Joe and I using the last lift, by which time we were behind the hill. I went on a stinky glide to a convergence cloud in the valley. 3 rough climbs later I was over Hay on Wye. From here I started to track West, but the climbs kept sending me North. Near Bronlys I was facing a total blue hole towards Brecon so started to push South again. The problem I was having was that the glides and climbs put me back in the same location. In one of the climbs I was joined by two Kites near Llyswen, which would be the third time in this spot I have these birds fly close by.
Eventually I managed to connect with a decent street running back to Llangorse, this seemed to be a strong convergence line with drift in climbs from SW. From Llangorse I though I could easily connect with ridge of Magic but a strong headwind coming from Crickhowell killed the glide and I ended up landing short of closing the triangle. From here I had a 1.5hr hike of shame back to the car. But with the satisfaction of 3hrs more air time than I thought I was going to get today.
